Lopsided tendency whatever be the aims and ideals of such organisations and however sympathetically conducted they ultimately and on crucial occasions tend to become sectarian narrow and bigoted and not infrequently exclusive and clannish.
To establish on earth an ideal state of society is a laudable objective indeed and few would dare to criticise much less oppose these excellent schemes for moral regeneration, except on the one ground that all such schemes will fail and fail miserably it they are not laid on sure and safe foundations. And here is our duty clear as crystal-now and when the dust and din of political controversies over all such schemes do not drown our feeble voice now is the time for us educationists, to state in no ambiguous terms that the first duty of the state is to educate to give the citizens the knowledge of the power to think aright and appreciate all such reform for into the darkness of ignorance and superstition such ideas will never penetrate nor gain permanency unless light through learning be first ensured.
