Graduates of the year! You now stand on the threshold of a career, a career, which for your sake and for the sake of your country, I hope may be both successful to yourselves and profitable to your country never has been there are greater need for Universities to turn out people of the right quality of leadership then there is today. The function of a University is not to manufacture a large number of graduates and turn them out with the rhythmic regularity and the precision of a mill. Our people have unfortunately given importance to the outward manifestations of the University courses of study.
An undue importance has been placed upon the degree that is given, upon the class and upon the rank that one may get. These are all useful and prophetic indications of a possible future. But the main aim of a University is not to turn out people who have crammed a great many subjects and who can, at an examination repeat them parrot wise to the satisfaction of the examiners. It has been aptly said :
“Knowledge dwells in heads replete with thoughts of other men; Wisdom in minds attentive to their own”
