Knowledge is proud that he has learned so much wisdom is humble that he knows no more.
The world today is torn asunder with conflicting ideas and ideologies. It is unfortunate that your lot is cast in a less sympathetic world and in a world which at present is, in all conscience a veritable cauldron of ignoble deeds. You can hardly get up in the morning and read a newspaper without a rude shock and without some news which upsets the equanimity of your mind. To you, my young friends, the heritage is a mixed blessing.
The days of narrow nationalism are over. Such narrow nationalism has brought nothing but ruin and disaster to the countries concerned. It is such nationalism that brought into existence the Hitler’s and Mussolini’s and the fate of those countries today point to the obvious moral.
The task that awaits those who propose to enter the various learned professions is by no means an easy one. Whether it be in the profession of medicine of Engineering of law of commerce, of agriculture or any of the other learned professions, the struggle for existence is great and while you are told that the country needs scores of men live you will find the strange paradox that no are in particular needs you; that you have to carve out for yourselves a place in this great battle for survival and that place will depend largely upon your own exertions, your own strength of character and your own determination to fulfil an objective. Let me not however draw an unduly pessimistic picture before your eyes.
