Dr. KARUNANIDHI AS AN ORATOR :

“Refined taste forms a critic; but genius is further necessary to form the poet or the orator”.

Hence the princely poet and peerless orator, our Kalaignar is a first rate genius and not merely a man of talents, for, as J.G. Holland says:

“Nature is the master of talent, genius is the master of Nature.” Again, “Genius must be born and never can be taught”.

Our Karunanidhi is therefore a born genius.

Though a junior to the late Dr. C. N. A. and is his mightiest and much-beloved younger brother, yet Mr. Karunanidhi is as an orator second to none and he stands over head and shoulders above most of the speakers in Tamilnadu.

“There is no true orator who is not a hero” says Emerson.

And Karunanidhi the glorious Orator is also the greatest hero of a thousand platforms and the god-like hero of the D. M. K. Party.

As Bryant says,
“Hark to that shrill, sudden shout,
The cry of an applauding multitude,
Swayed by some loud voiced orator who wields
The living mass as if he were its soul”

The enthusiasm kindles as he advances and when he arrives at his peroration, it is in full blaze.

His musical, sing song and spaced-out words in the beginning sound like a powerful trumpet as he speeds and ends as a rhythmic Niagara in musical rhyme.

None could then keep his audience more spell-bound and none could sway it more terrifically than this unrivalled Antony of Tamilnadu.

There is no power like the power of tongue in modern democracy and our worthy Kalaignar wields wonderful power in Tamilnadu.

“His figure was strikingly graceful and commanding, his features high and noble, his eyes full of power.

His voice, even when it sank to a whisper was heard to the remotest benches, and when he strained it to its full extent, the sound rose like the swell of the organ of a great Cathedral, shook the House with its peal and was heard through lobbies and down the stair-cases to the Court of Requests and the precincts of Westminster Hall”.

How aptly applicable are these words regarding William Pitt from Lord Macaulay, to our worthy Kalaignar too!

What gives most effect to his declamation is the air of sincerity, of vehement feeling and moral elevation which belong to all that he says.

The enthusiasm of this inimitable orator infects all who hear him; his ardour and noble bearing put fire into the most frigid conceit and give dignity to the most puerile allusion.

Dr. Karunanidhi’s oration within the Legislature or without it abounds with lively illustrations, striking examples, and well-told and passionate appeals.

It was as a speaker that he emerged from his class room and entered the political arena; it is as an orator that he sustains his present post and power; and it is as an orator that his party men and posterity would love to speak of him and perpetuate his memory.

Dr. KARUNANIDHI AS A DEBATER

Outstanding oratory does not always go with debating dexterity.

Here again Mr. Karunanidhi has a unique combination of these rare and powerful gifts He is the most ingenious, versatile and infinitely resourceful parliamentarian in Tamilnadu.

His razor-sharp intellect will rise equal to any occasion and give rapier-thrusts to the mightiest member of the Opposition.

His wonderful alacrity and retorts with wordy shafts are the despair of his foes. His stinging repartees and sallies of with silence his opponents.

The very perfection of this performance would provoke applause and peals of laughter from friends and foes alike.

Rightly does he answer the description of a minister by Saint Tiruvalluvar

Be thou quite sure before thou speak’st thine
word that no other word
Is there to cut and contradict that word when
that’s to be heard’

When Mr.C.Subramaniam asked as to how we could raise a statue for Raja Rajan since no one has seen him, Mr. Karunanidhi asked him back if those who worship the images of the Sixty-three Nayanmars have seen them in person.

There is no hitting him beneath his belt and getting away with it.

Though he could be fierce in attack and devastating in retort, Mr. Karunanidhi could also be sweet and humble on occasions.

He too could bill and coo like a dove with his opponents.

When attacked by a former Chief Minister, the present Chief Minister innocently pleaded with the former, “It is not becoming of big people like Mr.Bakthavatsalam to speak like this”.

Again when a veteran congress memberdesperately exclaimed.

PAAVIHALAA’, our Chief Minister did not get provoked but pathetically appealed to him, saying “you an elderly person should not curse youngsters like us”.

Mr. Karunanidhi is a veritable rose. If his thorns are sharp and long, his petals too are soft and strong. Charles Fox became the most brilliant and powerful debater that ever lived. Indeed, it would be difficult to name any eminent debater who has not made himself a master of his art at the expense of his audience.

Mr. Karunanidhi is the modern “Fox of Tamilnadu.”

It is because of his consciousness of the possession of power, resourcefulness and peerless strength that our Chief Minister has the moral courage to say ‘PECCAVI (I have sinned.)

When he realised that MURASOLI had omitted to mention the name of Mr.Nesamani in connection with its account of the agitation of the Nanjils for getting Kanyakumari, he calmly stood up and said “I apologise for it”.

It is such an attitude of meek submission and magnanimous behaviour on the part of such a mighty political leader which has raised his reputation higher and gained greater respect for him as much as it has served as a foil to his usually powerful and fierce debating in the Legislature and outside.

Dr. KARUNANIDHI AS A PLAYWRIGHT :

Our Kalaignar’s ability and fame as a writer of cine story, as a writer of dialogues, as a writer of short stories and as an actor on the stage constitute a complete chapter of glorious acts and achievements.

Suffice it to say that his success and reputation in the cine-world had contributed in no small a measure to his subsequent success in the political world.

“Soul of the Age, the applause and delight
And wonder of our Stage”

Dr. KARUNANIDHI AS AN ORGANISER AND ADMINISTRATOR :

Dr. Karunanidhi is as good an organiser of his political party as he is a great administrator of the State.

One of the leading lieutenants of the late Dr. Annadurai from the time of the foundation of the D. M. K. Party in 1949, the Kalaignar had been working his way up, simultaneously strengthening and galvanising his party by dint of his hard work, sincerity of purpose and sterling capacity.

Day in and day out, he has been ceaselessly and strenuously engaging himself in doing effective propaganda for his party and collecting funds for the same.

Since he easily exceeded by one lakh of rupees the target of ten lakhs set for him by his leader, Dr. Annadurai not only honoured him publicly by presenting him with a ring but also endearingly gave him the enviable and all-
powerful sobriquet of “Eleven Lakhs.”

He is as unrivalled, inimitable and all-powerful in the art of hind collection, as he is capable of keeping up the tone and morale of his party men after the demise of Anna, under his iron surveillance and supervision.

The pragmatic watchword and war cry of “Duty, Dignity and Discipline” is being honoured and lived out by all the members of his party.

His ascending of the party throne and assumption of its leadership took place almost naturally.

And his concession to Mr. Nedunchezhian without compromising on the essence was at once a generous gesture and an act of wisdom.
