Father Thomas Stevens, a Jesuit who was sent to Goa in 1579, was astonished to learn that Konkani was a language with no script.

Even today it is written in Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Devnagari, and Roman—an unusual linguistic phenomenon.

In 1615 he wrote a remarkable poem in Konkani called the Christu Purana. It was a mix of Konkani and Portuguese and was written in the Marathi script.
