INTRODUCTION TO ANNA
======================
The country’s scientific and developmental progress through English, among other things. He said no language would be subservient or inferior to the other, and argued that English would ensure the odds are evenly spread and, with it, all could win. History has vindicated him. Today, we have a 160-billion dollar Indian information technology industry that makes up 9.5 per cent of the GDP13, and English has played no small part in it, not to mention India’s scientific progress, Little known outside Tamil Nadu and unknown to the younger
generation of Tamils, the barely 5.3-foot tall leader remains one of the tallest postmodern Indian leaders.
Supremely self-assured and yet humble, Anna was a rare politician. His mission was not pan-Indian but pan-Tamil, and yet, he would turn out to be one of the greatest protectors of India’s territorial integrity and unity. Anna advocated a truly federal India where the Centre would handle defence, finance, foreign affairs and communications, and the states, the rest. The DMK pioneered the advent of regional parties in India’s polity, providing a safe and democratic outlet for regional aspirations within a united India.
For fourteen years, Anna worked under his ‘political father’ EVR and his Self-respect movement. The movement was humble and its followers were very modest-only drawn to it by the bitter truth behind its message and the hope of a new era. The duo’s sincerity, commitment to the cause, their prodigious people skills, talent and charisma were their only resources. Their political foes had greatly underestimated them. The trickle would slowly develop into a downpour and, by the 1940s and 1950s, the duo would have made great strides in their advocacy and mission. Ambition and philosophical differences, however, led to the son’ founding the DMK in 1949. In 1967, the DMK was voted to power.
In the US on a visit as chief minister in 1968, Anna said that no party should be in power for more than ten years–for such power would be ‘intoxicating’. How perceptive indeed. Similarly, he did not rule out the possibility of the DMK as part of a coalition at the Centre, although he considered it ‘far too distant’.14
Today’s generation and the generations to come would find it hard to believe that a man who was not a cricketer or a movie star was considered such a cult figure. People waited for hours on end patiently to catch a glimpse of the short man who so highly represented them and their interests. The historic record crowds that paid homage to him were a vindication of his life, which remains his message.
