Mughal emperor Akbar set up a translation bureau in India in the sixteenth century,The first translation of the Ramayana came from a Maulvi named Badayuni . Akbar also arranged for the Mahabharata, the Yogavasistha, the Harivamsa and the Bhagavata to be translated.
