A YouTube series by Carnatic musician Kalaimamani Dr.R Suryaprakash and Tamil Scholar Dr.Arul Avvai Natarajan presenting Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathiyar’s “Kuyil Pattu” in musical form with explanation.
I have a passion for presenting a host of Tamil songs and viruthams in my concerts. Eternally smitten by Mahakavi Bharathiyar’s poems and I have rarely failed to include a Bharathiar song in my concert. Recently I was relaxing in my home, listening to the call of the cuckoo in the garden, I thought of the Mahakavi and his “kuyil pattu” and suddenly had an inner urge to tune these songs and sing. The same day, by a divine coincidence I got to read a brilliant article on Kuyil Pattu written by the eminent Tamil scholar Dr.Arul Avvai Natarajan, son of the illustrious Dr.Avvai Natarajan. The interesting part is, Arul (as I call him) and myself were classmates in MCCHS School, Chetpet.. jiDr.Arul is presently the Director of Translations, Government of Tamil Nadu.
I called Arul and expressed the idea of presenting Kuyil Pattu together as weekly episodes on YouTube and social media, in which I could present select songs set in the tunes composed by me and at the end of each episode the scholar could give a brief explanation of the lyrical aspect of the songs rendered. Dr.Arul readily agreed and the introductory promo was released on Sunday, the 17th May 2020 in my facebook page. We intend to cover the Kuyil Pattu in its entirety, releasing an episode a week. The first episode will be premiered on YouTube channel “R. Suryaprakash Official” on Sunday, 24th May 2020 at 7 pm IST.

Kuyil Pattu, translated as “The Cuckoo’s Song” is an outstanding work of the National Poet who is equated to Shakespeare. The entire work is a description of a dream which was all about love. This poem of love unfolds thus into a picturesque drama. The dramatist personae of the Kuyil Paattu are Bharathi, a polyglot Kuyil, a monkey, a bull( the last two being in essence ghouls) a couple of young hunters a saint and a few nominal characters. In the end the poet discovers that everything was a hallucination. The best way to describe Kuyil Pattu would be to quote two lines from Milton’s L’Allegro.
“Such sights as youthful poets dream
On summer ever by haunted stream.”
I have set to tune, the verses in a variety of ragas such as Bouli, Natakuranji, Ahiri, Sumanesa Ranjani, Nalinakanthi, Atana, Sindhubhairavi, Durbari kanada etal. I have also employed new ragas Kuyilkurinji and Suryavasantha which are my own discoveries. I will sing and record the song/song(s) to be featured in each episode from the precincts of my home till the lockdown ends. The accompaniment could be remotely recorded and synced with the vocal wherever possible. I am overwhelmed with emotion when I think whether it is the will of the Mahakavi, the Bard that destined two school friends to get together after so many years to try and contribute something for the Tamil language and music.

Suryaprakash and yours truly were classmates in Madras Christian College Hr. Sec. School, Chetpet from 6 to 12th Standard. Suryaprakash was highly talented and was a Master Singer in those as well these days and I enjoy appreciating him from those days and wished his latent talent being tapped for Bharathiar’s eternal songs to the masses and classes of Tamil lovers.
Suryaprakash, strict follower of diligence, hard work and a commitment to do ones best will unravel lot of intricacies and nuances of Bharathiar’s songs in his Golden melodious voice.
I have been lucky to understand Suryaprakash strength and now maximizing those for Bharathiar’s songs has been a wonderful moment and am sure as we both understand ourselves and able to perform and things will workout to our schedules.
Suryaprakash had been continuously following me more than a year to do A Musico-Interpretative Dialogic Project and after he received the prestigious ‘Kalaimaamani’ award was again remainding me and thanks to Corona Pandamic, when we locked ourselves, we unlock our minds towards Bharathiar’s Kuyil Paattu which has never been tapped by Musical Pandits and Tamil Plaudits and this immortalizing 744 lines with 9 chapters is intrinsic and philosophically blended..
