Admirable Avvai Natarajan Sir

Way back in 1961 I was Persuing my degree at Madurai Thiagarajar college .
One day Dr .Avvai Natarajan barged into the class and started lecturing like an Orator he kept us Spell bound. My classmates even likened him to the Thespian Shivaji Ganesan Soon words went around and he became the Apple of eyes of all students.
l remember correctly even his Wedding reception was conducted with fanfare in the college Library building and also heard my college friends reading a poem on Avvai sir titled சிக்கல் and here goes the poem…..
சிக்கல்
நடராசன் நண்பரொடு எங்கும் சுற்றும்
நடைராசன்! நாம் வெள்ளித் திரையில் காணும்
படராசன் அல்லஇவர் அறிவு வாதப்
படைராசன் பிடித்தபிடி யாகப் பேசும்
அட ராசன்!திட ராசன்!அன்பு ராசன்!
அழகுதமிழ்க் கவிதைகளை நிறுத்தக் காட்டும்
எடை ராசன்!இவருக்கு எழுந்த சிக்கல்!
இனம்புரியாப் புதுச்சிக்கல்! இன்பச்சிக்கல்!
வீட்டுக்கு வரும்நேரம் காலம் என்னும்
விதிமுறைகள் சதிமுறைகள்! எனது நட்புக்
கூட்டுறவு நேரத்தைக் குறைய வைக்கும்
குறைபாட்டுத் திட்டம்தான் என்பார் இன்றோ
மாட்டிக்கொண் டார் பெரிய சிக்கல் தன்னில்!
மரியாதையாய் அந்தி மாலை நேரம்
வீட்டுக்கு வராவிட்டால் என்ன ஆகும்
விழி அம்பு பாயாதா நெஞ்சு நோக்கி!
எட்டுகஜம் பத்துகஜ தூரம் மட்டும்
இருக்கட்டும் உன்வெளிச்சம் நிலவே! என்று
கட்டுதிட்டம் எவன்செய்வான்? அரட்டை நேரம்
கால்மணிதான் உனக்கென்று வாய் அடைப்புச்
சட்டமிட முடியாது எனக்கு என்பார்
சரியல்ல இனிஅந்தப் பேச்சு! வீட்டில்
எட்டடிக்கும் முன்இரவில் வருதல் வேண்டும்
இல்லையென்றால் கிளம்பாதா நெருப்பு வார்த்தை!
என்னாடா இதுபெரிய வம்பு வீட்டில்
இருந்திடுவோம் எப்போதும் எனநினைத்தால்
என்னாகும் அப்போதும்? அடிமை யாக
இருக்கின்றார் மனைவிக்கு என்போம் நாங்கள்!
துன்பம் தான்! சிக்கல் தான்! இந்தச்சிக்கல்
துடைக்கத்தான் நடக்கின்றார் வெளியில் கொஞ்சம்!
அன்புருவ நடராசன் பழைய ஆளா?
ஆகிவிட்டார் இப்போது புதிய ஆளாய்!
Years rolled . By then he acquired many laurels It is sufficient to mention that his story forms a part of Tamil History .
As an Expert he visited Presidency college for an Academic work in the year1996. I was closeted with him for one whole day Not only did he brighten the room with his Wit and Wisdom but also showered his affection on the Professor’s around .
Again after few years Listened to him When Sri Ku .Rajavelu book was released . Every one clapped When Avvai spoke and the V.I.P who clapped loudest was Sri R Venkat Raman .Yes the former President of India .
Dr Avvai Natarajan is Unique in endearing himself to everyone.
