The Chief Minister has always treated the agitators against his Government with consideration and sometimes with kindness too.
He is ready to reconsider his decision if reasons so dictate.
He has never stood on false prestige.
He could as sternly arrest and imprison the agitating land grabbers in the Tanjore District as he would smilingly release them all the moment they regret and repent.
No other Chief Minister could or would so liberally and generously consider almost all the demands of the striking Simpson workers and the textile mill workers of Coimbatore, as he has done.
It is not out of weakness or fear but out of meekness born of strength and a full consciousness of its possession.
Above all, a sincere concern for the peace and an anxiety for the preservation of the already-established reputation of Tamil Nadu are alone responsible for his concessions and indulgences in the matter of the labourers, urban and rural.
There has therefore been no other minister here or elsewhere who has established such a rich record of the successful solution of labour disputes or strikes except our Chief Minister. Dr. Karunanidhi is a man of the masses: he is always proud to call himself “an ordinary man” (Saamaanyan)
Therefore it is that he alone succeeds where others fail. His writ runs not only in the labour world but also in the capitalist conclaves.
The intransigence of the striking lorry-owners was wiped off by Karunanidhi first by threats and then by concession but with no capitulation on the essential point of five percent tax.
Similar was the case with the unbending mill-owners in Coimbatore.
The unfounded cloud of doubts in the minds of Asthigas regarding the real mind and attitude of the Kalaignar towards God and religion has now been dispelled once and for all.
Our Doctor’s last visit to the hill-Temple at Palani, his offering of worship at the altar of Lord Muruga, his avowal of faith in that sole Tamil God, his reintroduction of the Car-Festival at Tiruvarur and a number of other religious activities and reforms have all convinced one and all that the D.M.K. in general and Dr. Karunanidhi in particular are as religious as the most religious of the so-called Asthigas.
Only they are religious without being ritualistic; and they believe in one God without broadcasting it to the people at large.
Our temples in Tamilnadu have entered a new era of repairs, rejuvenation and rich festivals under his regime.
Well has he declared with wisdom: “While Asthikas seek and o after God, we want God to seek and reach us”.
Dr. M. KARUNANIDHI – HIS POPULARITY
The erstwhile slumbering Congress giant Mr. K. Kamaraj on the one hand and the congress (R) politicians on the other led by Messrs.
M. Bhakthavatsalam and C. Subramaniam on the other are of late mounting their mighty and monstrous attacks against Dr. Karunanidhi and his D.M.K. Government.
They show no mercy and seek none. Theirs is an all-out attack, though from different directions and camps.
Cannon to the right of him cannon to the left of him and cannon in front of him volley and thunder.
But the Chief Minister is calm and serene and Janus-faced repels the attacks with rare courage and rapier thrusts simultaneously.
Nay, he indefatigably carries the battle into the enemies’ camps and devaste and destroy their forts of feeble cards.
“Calm and serene, he drives the furious blast
And pleased the Almighty’s orders to perform,
Rides in the whirlwind and directs the storm.”
Despite it all and despite even the desperate determination of the “demi-god” of a Rajaji to dethrone him, Dr. Karunanidhi is the most democratic leader who is now, as always before, the darling of the masses and the delightful idol of the millions of the plebeians in Tamilnadu.
I cannot do better than quote the following passages which describe the popularity of Karunanidhi in the most picturesque manner :
1) “They more or else came in with cap and knee, Met him in
boroughs, cities, villages, Attended him on bridges, stood on lanes, Laid gifts before him, proffered him their oaths, Gave him their heirs, as pages followed him, Even at his hands in golden multitudes”’
-Shakespeare.
2) “All tongues speak of him, and the bleared sights Are spectacled
to see him, Stalls, Burks and windows Are smothered up, leads filled and ridges horsed With variable complexions all agreeing In earnestness to see him”
-Shakespeare
3) “Some shout him and some hang upon his car,To gaze in his eyes and bless him. Maidens wave Their Kerchiefs and old women weep for joy; While others not so satisfied, unhorse The gilded equipage and turning loose His steeds, usurp a place they well deserve”
-Cowper.
CONCLUSION
Our talented and beloved Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Tamizha Vel, Kalaignar, and Dr. M. Karunanidhi is entering his Fiftieth year today He is at the prime of his manhood and pinnacle of power.
Seated on his throne studded with precious stone with the majesty and grandeur of a monarch like Asoka or Akbar and a warrior like Caesar or Napoleon, Dr. Karunanidhi the all-powerful Chief Minister of Tamilnadu could justifiably exclaim’ “ I am the monarch of all I survey!”
For, indeed, he is a monarch of many fields and an emperor of eminence.
The Dynamic leader of the D.M.K. party, the Titanic Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, the most gifted poet of mellifluous Tamil, the mightiest orator of multi-coloured eloquence, the dexterous wordy athlete of dialect and debate, the stately sovereign of dialogues and story-writing, the inimitable master of efficient administration and above all, the beloved pet of the rich and the poor, Dr. Karunanidhi is an avowed leader of the Tamils and an awe-inspring phenomenon in the creation of the Almighty.
Karunanidhi is a fine flower of Tamil Culture and a finer fruit of the Tamil race.
His sterling head is being balanced by his sympathetic heart.
The Kalaignar is today the model and mellowed Avatar of the mighty Tamil Monarchs Karikalan and Raja Rajan:
he is their integrated edition of the Twentieth century.
“Energy! thy name is Karunanidhi!
Service ! thy name is Kalaignar Pathi!”
May God Almighty save him for the Tamil and strengthen him for Tamil Nadu !
