முனைவர் ஔவை அருள்

முனைவர் பட்ட ஆய்வின் நாற்பத்தொன்றாம் பகுதி வருமாறு:
Translation pieces that have been included and described earlier, while looking at the work of the various translators,clearly illustrate the wide spectrum in the act of translation.
The renderings of the many, matched the Bard’s poetry with the graces of Tamil.
It is after a period of such highs, that the art of translation and that of the Bard in Tamil, faced the peril of mediocrity.
Some questions still remain unasked:
· Is Shakespeare sensibility on the wane
· Why, has there been no significant translation(s) in Tamil since then
As things stand, appreciation of literature in the English language, has assumed different forms.
Of late, with translation and comparative literature conjoining under a single focus, the possibilities of “Shakespeare appreciation ”have opened up immensely.
If Shakespeare’s play can be rendered in summary form, abridged or retold, they can as well be painted, rescripted, compressed and choreographed, they can also be packaged as plays and episodes of serio – comic intensities that can even be rendered as Villuppattu.
With an awareness of the integrated art-forms that are currently used, the sensibility of the Tamils cannot simply keep quiet by just reminiscing its earlier accomplishments.
The character of this century being dramatic and celluloidal, the continued intoxication for the Bard’s Dramaturgy remains a factor hardly inapplicable to Tamil Shakespeare context.
A syllabus without Shakespeare may come to be operational, but syllabus does not govern the sensibility fundamentally.
Like the Epics, Shakespeare’s work shall always have some say in an interpretative way with respect to social and literary issues.
Once again, the educated middle class will keep Shakespeare alive.
The Tamil translator of today has every option to improve and achieve a dramatic closeness hitherto undreamt of. Aru. Somasundram’s prolific efforts reflect the impatient literate of the middle order.
With eighty percent of the schools offering education in English medium, the days to come are well disposed to English reception.
Based on this fact, it can be stated that with the skills in English improving, the chances of vigorous and new order translations of the Bard in Tamil are really considerable.
The Tamil psyche of the pre-1950 period tilted more towards literature, whereas from the second half of the 20th century, the trend is towards science and politics.
However, it can be said with some certainity that the study of great classics will never suffer.
In the modern day, translation has a become a discipline by itself and scholars in different parts of the world discuss translation from different angles.
While the earlier Tamil translators of Shakespeare putting their individual stamps on their rendering of Shakespeare, with the spread of inter-literary, inter-cultural and inter-linguistic influences, we can expect the future Tamil translators of Shakespeare to explore new techniques and possibilities of translating Shakespeare.
It may be fitting to look at the observation made by Dr. R.K.Dasgupta on Shakespeare. In Shakespeare’s tragic world,
Wisdom comes from his discovery of a meaning
In human suffering and its beauty is in that meaning
Its grief is fine, full and perfect and
by this we come to a knowledge of our glory in our defeat
His comic word is a world of good
sense and human feeling where laughter is
kindlier than the laughter of an Aristophanes
or a shaw and promises good cheer to all who
desire it Perhaps the world, such as we live in
today, is incapable of producing another
Shakespeare. But to be able to understand the
Only Shakespeare the world has produced
Would be an excellent achievement of modern imagination.
As pointed out by Dr. R.K.Dasgupta, Shakespeare will continue to retain his relevance in the days to come and to reign supreme in the minds of the Tamil people for ever.
And as it has been said of the ancient Tamil Classics, of Shakespeare too, we might say that
“As long as the hills stand, and the rivers flow, for as long as civilized mankind survives on the earth, so long will the essence of Shakespeare’s imagination mingle in global humanity’s heart, exercising the mind, setting the heart ablaze, and attuning the still centre of the soul for the ineffable rhythm of existence”.
